Only one man has out-rushed the entire Titans team since 2024.

They let him walk without an offer. Today, he laces up for the first time against them as the league’s leading rusher since his contract expired in 2024.

In 2024, the Titans let the man they put on their throne walk out the door. They bet on a younger Tony Pollard, figuring Henry, freshly 30, had outrun his best years.

The King left with grace, taking the microphone to midfield after the final game of 2023 to thank Titans fans for “the greatest eight years of my life.” He then trotted onto Baltimore’s field and went on to have the most efficient season of his career (5.9 yards per carry, the most of his career, on 1,921 rushing yards, the second-most of his career).

Turns out the very man they let go would single-handedly out-rush their entire team, from the day he walked out to today. And today is the day he laces up against them for the first time ever.

Here’s what I mean by single-handedly, because I want to be clear that I’m not talking about their backfield or their running backs, I’m talking about the entire Tennessee Titans team, every back, every quarterback scramble, every single carry they’ve had since the day he left.

SeasonDerrick Henry (BAL)Entire Titans teamHenry’s edge
20241,921 yds · 16 TD1,855 yds · 11 TD+66 yds · +5 TD
20251,595 yds · 16 TD1,589 yds · 9 TD+6 yds · +7 TD
2026 (thru Wk 3)301 yds · 6 TD271 yds · 2 TD+30 yds · +4 TD
Total3,817 yds · 38 TD3,715 yds · 22 TD+102 yds · +16 TD

That’s regular season rushing only, through Week 3, and both of those totals are going to move after today, so read this as where things stood at kickoff. One man, up 102 yards and 16 touchdowns on a 53-man roster, and he’s done it every single season since he left, not just in total. It’s not one monster year carrying the number.

And just so nobody has to say it for me, Tennessee didn’t make him the King. Henry did that himself, and if you want to understand how, go look up his diet and his workouts, any video you can find, because the discipline this man has is outrageous and you’ll come away jaw-dropped.

But Tennessee was the kingdom. That’s where the crown went on his head, that’s the city he reigned over for eight years, and since the day they let him walk he’s been reigning over them from the other sideline.

The part nobody said out loud

Now here’s the part that nobody said out loud, and it’s the context that pulls the whole thing together, a stat that I can’t stop thinking about. It’s the irony in the fact that the only player in the entire NFL who has out-rushed the Titans since 2024 is the one they let walk out the door.

You would assume somebody else in this league has done it, because it’s a league full of great backs, Saquon Barkley, Jonathan Taylor, Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, Christian McCaffrey, take your pick. Nope. Through 2025, Barkley had 3,145 rushing yards over that window, Taylor had 3,016, Bijan had 2,934, and the Titans as a team had 3,444. Not one of them cleared it.

Henry cleared it by 72 and kept going, and three games into this season there isn’t a single player within 400 yards of the Titans’ three-season number. ESPN pointed out last November that Henry out-rushed the 2024 Titans, and that’s true, but that’s one season. What nobody, as far as I can find, has pointed out is that it’s happened every season since he left, and that he’s the only player in the NFL who’s done it.

I’ll give you the caveat before a Titans fan does. On touchdowns alone, Henry is not the only back ahead of Tennessee since 2024. Taylor, Jahmyr Gibbs, James Cook, Josh Jacobs and Kyren Williams all have more rushing scores than the Titans do. But Henry’s 38 still leads every one of them, the yards are his alone, and he is the only player who beats them in both. Yards and touchdowns together is the complete rushing stat, and one back has it over an entire franchise.

In fact, since 2024 to current date, Henry leads the entire NFL in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Not just the Titans. Everyone. The man they didn’t offer a contract to has been the best rusher in football from the day he left.

It wasn’t the money. It was personal.

And they didn’t even save money doing it. Tennessee signed Pollard for three years and $21.75 million, which is $7.25 million a year, and Baltimore signed Henry for two years and $16 million, which is $8 million a year. Nearly the same money, different back.

Since then Pollard has 2,334 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, Henry has 3,817 and 38, and the Titans are 6-31. Lamar Jackson said this week that if the 2023 trade for Henry had gone through, the Ravens probably would’ve been playing in the Super Bowl.

The cliff has no edge

I get why they made the bet. Thirty has become the taboo number for running backs, the age the whole league treats like a cliff, and Henry had just turned it coming off 1,167 yards at 4.2 a carry.

Then he went to Baltimore and averaged 5.9. At 31 he ran for 1,595 yards and 16 touchdowns, second in the NFL in both, and at 32, three games in, he leads the league in rushing touchdowns. He is dispelling the cliff every single week like he’s stiff-arming Father Time himself.

This is a personal blog, so I’ll say the quiet part. I’m biased, I’m a Ravens fan, I’m a Maryland native. But let’s get this straight anyway: the one guy you don’t let out the door is the guy who ends up beating you on every end. The Titans haven’t been the cream of the crop in any facet of the game since 2024, we all know that, and 6-31 proves it.

Hindsight is 20/20, and if anything puts that saying into a life-size visual, it’s this. It’s poetic justice in the most literal sense: the one man who single-handedly out-rushed you on every facet is the one you let out the door.

Henry said this week that “it’s always love” toward Tennessee, but that there won’t be much love on Sunday. Though I’d be rooting for Henry anyway, some things are bigger than football. I’m pulling for Baltimore, but I’m getting my popcorn out in hopes of a stiff-arm right in the face of those who let him walk out the door.
